Jana Sipes Kohler
During her time at BAHS, Jana was a 4-year letter winner in volleyball, basketball and track & field. She was recognized as MVP for the Beaver Co. Times Track & Field Invitational (1979 & 1980). Jana set 5 school records - high jump, long jump, javelin and triple jump and was a state qualifier in the javelin and long jump. She also set the Beaver Co. javelin record. She was recognized as the Most Outstanding Female Athlete in the Class of ‘80.
At Slippery Rock University, Jana was a 2-time Field MVP at the PSAC Track & Field Championships (1985 & 1986). She placed 3rd in the Heptathlon at Penn Relays in 1986. She was an NCAA Division II National Qualifier (1985 & 1986), and an All-American in Javelin and Heptathlon (1986). Ranking 19th in the US in 1986 in the Heptathlon, she was the only PSAC Athlete to ever win 4 events at a championship meet. She set a state record in the Heptathlon in 1986 and qualified for the US Olympic Trials in Heptathlon. She set the school record in Heptathlon.
Jana has received numerous honors, including Beaver Co. Sports Hall of Fame, Dick Kadis Award Recipient (1987); USATF National Masters Championship, 1st place in Heptathlon (1993); Beaver Co. Sports Hall of Fame (1994); Slippery Rock University Athletic Hall of Fame (1998); and the Seattle Metro League Athletic Director of the Year (2004).
Her athletic influence continues as a coach and teacher. Jana was the Asst. Track & Field Coach at the University of Pittsburgh (1987-1989); the Asst. Track & Field Coach at the University of Washington (1995-1997); and the Athletic Director of Holy Names Academy in Seattle, Washington (1997-2010). She has been teaching Health and Physical Education since 2010.
She is married to Monte Kohler, has 4 children - Ashley, Race, John and Cody Marie and 2 grandchildren - John & Parker Marie.
